It’s a question that has been weighing heavily on my heart this week:
When did murder become something people celebrate?
When did tragedy stop shocking us?

I don’t believe there is a single moment we can point to, but I do believe this shift began years ago—when we placed a smartphone in the hands of a human being.

With one tap, we gained instant access to everything: pornography, violent video games, videos of shootings and terrorism.
All on the go. All just a click away.

At first, it felt exciting—like a thrilling window into the world. But over time, something more subtle and dangerous began to happen. Our brains adapted.

Little by little, the unthinkable started to feel… normal.

Daily exposure to violence and cruelty, often packaged as entertainment, has quietly rewired us. What once shocked us now barely registers. It has been a slow burn, and now we find ourselves living in a world where celebrating another human being’s death no longer surprises anyone.

I’ll be honest: I am scared. I am disheartened. I am discouraged.
But I am not giving up.

Because awareness is the first step toward change. And change, I believe, is possible.

Where We Go From Here

The antidote to desensitization isn’t complicated, but it requires commitment. And it starts with each of us.

Set healthy technology boundaries.
Create screen-free hours. Take regular digital breaks. Teach children that devices are tools, not lifelines.

Model empathy.
Show kids compassion in action. Be the person who listens fully, who extends kindness even when it isn’t convenient.

Engage in real conversations.
Have the difficult discussions—with openness, respect, and a willingness to understand. When we model open-mindedness with someone whose ideas we don’t agree with, this creates healthy debate.

Reconnect with the real world.
Choose presence over constant scrolling. Invite someone for coffee. Share a meal. Look people in the eye. Hug a little longer.

We do not have to accept this as our new normal. We are not powerless. Every boundary we set, every compassionate act, every meaningful conversation is a quiet rebellion against apathy.

Change begins with awareness. Change begins with courage. Change begins with us.

Let’s choose to feel again. Let’s choose to care. The world needs our humanity—and it begins right here, right now, with each of us deciding to lead with heart.
