Nora Ephron (May 19, 1941 – June 26, 2012)

Yesterday, we lost a beloved legend, American filmmaker, screenwriter, director, producer, novelist, playwright, journalist, and author, Nora Ephron.

Nora Ephron was best known for her romantic comedies and was a triple Academy Award nominee for Original Screenplay for three films: Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle. Her last film was Julie & Julia.

I have been a long-time fan of Nora Ephron’s work, and today I would like to honor her by showcasing her words. A magnificent craftsman of words, she taught us much…

She was wise:

“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.”

She was honest and bold:

“I don’t care who you are. When you sit down to write the first page of your screenplay, in your head, you’re also writing your Oscar acceptance speech.”

She was bang on (and funny):

“Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy.”

~

“When your children are teenagers, it’s important to have a dog so that someone in the house is happy to see you.”

She was a romantic, but still always funny:

“When you’re attracted to someone, it just means that your subconscious is attracted to their subconscious, subconsciously. So what we think of as fate is just two neuroses knowing that they are a perfect match.” – Sleepless in Seattle

~

“In my sex fantasy, nobody ever loves me for my mind.”

She was on the fence, like so many of us here…

“Here are some questions I am constantly noodling over: Do you splurge or do you hoard? Do you live every day as if it’s your last, or do you save your money on the chance you’ll live twenty more years? Is life too short, or is it going to be too long? Do you work as hard as you can, or do you slow down to smell the roses? And where do carbohydrates fit into all this? Are we really all going to spend our last years avoiding bread, especially now that bread in American is so unbelievable delicious? And what about chocolate?”

She was delicious:

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” – When Harry Met Sally

RIP Nora Ephron. You will be sadly missed, and greatly remembered.
