Have you ever wondered why it can be so hard to practice and prioritize self-care?
If so, you’re not alone. I promise.

Despite all the benefits I speak of often, from reducing stress to improving your mental health, many of us struggle to prioritize taking care of ourselves.

And the truth is, during stressful times, our self-care is usually the first thing to go… (when we actually need it most).

So, why we don’t practice self-care you might wonder?

Here are 4 reasons why you might be holding back on self-care, and therefore not allowing yourself the chance to live your life to its fullest potential:

1. Perceived lack of time

One of the most common reasons people don’t practice self-care is because they feel like they don’t have enough time. With busy schedules and numerous responsibilities, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. However, self-care doesn’t have to be time-consuming, and even small actions like taking a few deep breaths or going for a short walk can make all the difference.

2. Guilt

Some people feel guilty for taking time for themselves, especially if they have family or work obligations. But it’s really important to remember that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary for maintaining good physical and mental health. Taking care of yourself can actually benefit those around you by allowing you to be more present and engaged!

3. Lack of knowledge

Some people may not know how to practice self-care or may not be aware of the different options available to them. This can make it difficult to get started, but there are plenty of resources available, including books like my GOALS journal, online articles (thousands on our blog at EricaDiamond.com), courses (BusyToBliss.com), and professional counselors who can provide guidance.

4. Prioritizing others

Many people put the needs of others before their own, which can lead to neglecting their own self-care. While it’s important to be there for our loved ones and to fulfill responsibilities, it’s equally important to take care of yourself. Remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup, so taking care of yourself is necessary for being able to show up for others in the long run.

Taking care of yourself is crucial because it enables you to better handle life’s challenges (on top of all the mental and physical benefits). Prioritizing your self-care allows you to recharge, reduce stress, improve focus and productivity, cultivate healthy relationships, and promote long-term happiness and fulfillment.

If you find yourself merely surviving and not thriving, there is a good chance smart self-care is the answer.

Tell me if you struggle with self-care, and if you are 1, 2, 3 or 4 above?
