Everyday in the Diamond household, there are two kids’ lunches to prepare: A main meal, 3 snacks, water and juice (the juice only goes to my older one). I have noticed a steady decline lately in the quality of snacks in their lunches (obviously my fault, despite being a very healthy household), and it’s driving me bananas! My 3 year old loves foods like salmon, quiche and all things healthy. He’s quite a pleasure to feed. My big son is a little “trickier,” shall we say. Mealtime has been a huge problem for us, actually. If I’m serving salmon to the family, and my 7 year old refuses to eat it, and therefore I’m making him a grilled cheese, all of a sudden, my 3 year old hates salmon. And then I’m screwed! All healthy goes out the window. And lord knows, I ain’t no Martha Stewart.
So, what’s gone on here during mealtime, has also gone on with school lunches and more specifically their snacks. My little one will take yogourt, cheese, and other healthy snacks to school. My big one doesn’t like yogourt or cheese. And so the daily battle begins when we’re preparing school lunches. The kids go to the pantry to choose their snacks, and there begins the kvetch-a-thon and battle. Me pushing the healthy, them asking for things that their friends bring to school, that I will not buy.
Everyday, a struggle.
And judging from your emails, I’m not alone.
You asked, I’m delivering.
For all Women On The Fence about what healthy snacks to pack for your kids, here are some suggestions your children will actually enjoy! Then give me your healthy snack suggestions at the bottom. Let’s get healthy!
1. Chewy Oatmeal Cookies. Click here for the recipe.
2. Organic Pretzels
3. Organic Cheese Sticks
4. Bananas dipped in organic chocolate
5. Homemade Trail Mix (no nuts for peanut-free schools). Check out Jessica Seinfeld’s Recipe.
6. Carrots and celery sticks with hummus
7. Pita wedges and hummus
8. Healthy cereal is a great snack!
9. Homemade banana muffins. Try this healthy recipe!
10. Smoothies in their water bottles!
11. Fruit with this homemade dip: Mix a bit of cinnamon into French vanilla yogurt and dip your fruit into it.
12. Organic tortilla chips and salsa
13. Whole grain crackers
14. Granola bar. But be careful of the ingredients. Beware of high-fructose corn syrup.
15. Organic yogourt. There are many brands and flavors on the market that are pleasing to kids and are still healthy!
16. Whole wheat bagels chips with a protein dip
17. Popcorn. No, not the movie theater popcorn. I enjoy this brand, Neal Brothers.
18. If your kids love Goldfish, (which kid doesn’t), try Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies instead.
19. Some kids enjoy edamame. You can even sprinkle with a tad bit of coarse salt… at least they’re getting their greens!
20. Let’s not forget fresh fruit!
21. Homemade mini pizzas cut into tiny squares. What is so wrong with cheese, bread and tomato sauce for a nutritious snack?
22. Rice cakes served with almond butter (if allowed), or avacado spread.
23. Graham crackers are a great snack dipped in apple sauce.
24. Apple sauce
25. Fresh whole wheat baguette or bread, when in doubt, always works!
And another suggestion: when your kids come home ravenous after school, what has worked for me, is to already have fresh cut-up fruits or veggies ON THE KITCHEN TABLE waiting for them. This limits the, “There’s nothing to eat for snack,” complaint.
Here’s to healthy eating my friends!

I feel your pain! My kids lunches have become my daily source of stress and aggrivation. I find that letting them help in the selection process decreases the chances of their lunches coming home fully untouched. So great for you that you encourage them to give suggestions. I send them frozen grapes. They love that. Good luck.
GREAT SUGGESTIONS. I just printed them out and posted them on my fridge.
Love it!
My friend and I were just bitching about this topic this morning at breakfast. We all want to pack healthy lunches but the problem is, when I pack healthy it comes back full and uneaten. When I pack what they like like mini oreos, ok chips sometimes I feel better knowing that at least they’re eating. I feel like this is always a losing battle. I definitely going to try some of your suggestions. I’ll keep you posted.
Whole wheat pancakes at recess! My kids love them. Whole wheat tortilla pinwheels (with cheese, turkey, peanut butter at home), celery sticks with spreadable cheese.

Great suggestions. School lunches have always been an issue in our house. I credit it as one of the reasons I have grey hair!
Wow, maybe that’s the reason for my first grey this year!
Making lunches has quickly become my biggest pet-peeve ever, more than cleaning the toilets! My kids are so picky. The main lunch meal is especially tough.
I refuse to put any type of junk food or high-suger content items in their lunch boxes. It doesn’t hlep when they come home telling me all their friends get oreos, Dortios or chips as a snack. My kids lunches have 2 or 3 fruit and veggies. My son will eat anything and everything I put into his bag: yogurt, cheese sticks, applesauce. Whereas if my daughter doesn’t like what I send her bag comes home full. And to be honest, the things I send her she eats all the time, apples, bananas, grapes, carrots, cut up cantaloupe, so if it come shome full I don’t care, because if she is hungry she will eat what is in her bag! I like a lot of your suggestions, I just wish my kids would be adventurous and try even one!
Trading is definitely a problem. When they get older, having a ‘cool’ ie. unhealthy lunch is also a matter of pride. I am constantly adjusting and adapting. And resisting their pleas to get ‘Gusher.’ Whatever they are.
OMG, my son asks for gushers too!!! Frustrating i know. I give in every now and then so he doesn’t resent me. All in moderation I think. That’s my best advice!
Thanks for the list of snack ideas! I can always use more. I usually give my kids one “treat” snack in their lunches, usually two cookies or a muffin. The rest of the lunch is veggies, fruit, a whole grain something and a protein of some sort. If the lunches are coming back with the veggies untouched, the “treat” stops for a few days. If they are too full, they need real food more than they need a cookie.
They help make nut-free trail mix for school snacks too (we use nuts for non-school times). Not really a recipe, but here’s a link to the “guidelines”: http://familytaleslifeintheinnercity.blogspot.com/2010/10/kids-trail-mix.html
I have to say, when the lunch comes home full of healthy food and untouched, it drives me crazy. I’m still fighting this battle. It feels I’m losing on most days!

hey, nice weblog and good publish
Interesting weblog
Interesting post
Very nice tips. Thanks
Celery sttuffed with cream cheese (instead of pb) with rasins on top – “ants on a log”
Hard boiled eggs
Deviled eggs
Mushrooms filled with cream cheese (one of my sons likes these)
Frozen corn or peas (put next to an ice pack) – my kids think these are alomst as good as popsicles
We put fresh fruit in with plain yogurt and just a touch of honey
We also let the kids pick a different kind of cheese from the deli section – meunster or something like that
Pickles, olives, pickled baby corn
Bean salad
Pasta salad, made with high protein, high fiber pasta
Organic fruit leather, in moderation
My kids favourite snack is plain or vanilla yogurt with natural berry powder. I give them a few
cups with different berry powders, and they can prepare their own berry-yogurts. It’s a high-fiber, low-calorie, sugar and additive free snack. Quick, fun and delicious!
I only use Scandinavian berry powders, since they come from the cleanest part of the world.
