August and the back-to-school season often bring a renewed focus and energy. This mindset can be the time to take a deep dive into your career.
Deciding to leave a job is one of the most challenging decisions we face in our careers. It’s not just about finding another source of income; it’s about stepping away from a place that has likely shaped a significant part of your identity. I know this feeling well. Over the years, I’ve coached countless women who have found themselves at a crossroads, questioning whether to stay or to go.
The example of my client ‘Sarah’ (not her real name) was a marketing executive who had spent nearly a decade climbing the corporate ladder. From the outside, her life looked perfect—successful career, financial stability, the respect of her peers. But inside, Sarah felt an overwhelming sense of dread every Sunday night. The passion she once had for her work had long since faded, replaced by constant stress and a growing feeling that something was missing. Sarah stayed in that job far longer than she should have, fearing the unknown and the possibility of failure. It wasn’t until she began to experience burnout that she realized she had to make a change. Walking away was terrifying, but it was also liberating.
There is a truth we often ignore: sometimes, the best way to take care of ourselves is to walk away. But how do you know when it’s time to make that move? How do you distinguish between a rough patch and a signal that it’s time to move on?
Today, I’m sharing some signs that it might be time to leave your job. Whether you’re feeling unfulfilled, facing burnout, or simply outgrowing your current role, this will help you distinguish the difference between mild job stress, and the glaring sign that it’s time to go. Because at the end of the day, your job should fuel your passion, not drain it.
8 Signs It Might Be Time To Walk Away…
1. Chronic Stress and Burnout: If your job is causing ongoing stress or burnout that negatively impacts your mental and physical health, it may be time to reconsider your position.
2. Lack of Growth Opportunities: If you feel stagnant and there are no opportunities for advancement or skill development, it might be time to seek a role that offers more growth.
3. Misalignment with Values: When your job no longer aligns with your personal values or ethics, continuing in the role can lead to dissatisfaction and discomfort.
4. Toxic Work Environment: A toxic work environment, characterized by constant negativity, bullying, or poor management, is detrimental to your well-being and productivity.
5. No Work-Life Balance: If your job significantly interferes with your personal life and you can’t achieve a reasonable work-life balance, it may be time to look for a more flexible role.
6. Underappreciation: Feeling undervalued or unrecognized for your contributions can lead to a lack of motivation and fulfillment.
7. Intuition: Sometimes, a gut feeling that you’re not in the right place or that you need a change is a strong indicator that it’s time to move on.
8. Financial Instability: If the job doesn’t provide sufficient financial stability or growth potential, considering a switch for better prospects might be necessary.
Deciding to walk away from a job is not easy, but it’s possible to do, and possibly one of the most empowering choices you can make for your well-being and future if you’re currently being compromised. It’s about recognizing your worth, honoring your needs, and choosing a path that aligns with your values and passions.
Beyond these 8 signs above, it’s crucial to listen to that inner voice that knows when something isn’t right. Trust yourself to make the best decision.
Remember, leaving a job doesn’t mean failure; it’s a courageous step toward a life that’s more fulfilling and aligned with who you are. Whether you’re moving on to a new role, starting your own venture, or taking time to rediscover your passions, know that this is your journey, and you have the power to shape it.
As I’ve seen in my coaching practice and through my own experiences, when you let go of what no longer serves you, you create space for new opportunities and growth – that is self-care in its purest form. So if you find yourself standing at that crossroads, take a deep breath, trust in your ability to make the right choice– AND THAT CHOICE MIGHT MEAN STAYING PUT FOR NOW, or walking away with confidence.
Wishing you Godspeed on your journey.
