When you hear the name Richard Branson, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Money? Power? Success? Philanthropy? Well, yes, all these may be true, but I had the great fortune of sitting down to chat with Sir Richard Branson this weekend, and getting to see a softer side. It was amazing to meet a great visionary who I actually wrote about in my book, 99 Things Women Wish They Knew Before Staring Their Own Business. In fact, I gave him a signed copy to take on the plane! 🙂
I really wanted to blog about the current events surrounding Congressman Anthony Weiner. Yes, THAT Weiner who showed HIS Wiener on Twitter and then lied about it. But then I reconnected with one of our amazing previous Guest Bloggers, Kiri Blakely, who has been covering all things Weinergate. And I think she did a better job than me.

While some of my friends have been getting their older kids ready for sleep-away camp, I came across some FANTASTIC letters of my own, that my mother kept of my first summer at sleep-away camp. I was 8 years old. I had BEGGED my parents to send me to sleep-away camp with my friends, and after much persuasion, they sent me.

With women in the workforce today and parents more exhausted than ever before, moms and dads often find themselves overcompensating for issues they feel guilty about… such as divorce, or working many hours. We’ve all been guilty of plopping our kid in front of Baby Einstein just to get a moment’s reprieve. But we as their parents are the role models. Children don’t only learn by listening, they learn by watching. It is up to us to model proper behavior and practice restraint when it comes to demands placed by these Gen Z’ers.
When my mother forwarded this to me last week, I immediately put it in my SAVED folder for today. Usually, it’s Wordless Wednesday, but today is Wisdom Wednesday. No matter what religion you are, or what your beliefs are, I would like to simply present an option… a way of looking at your life.
I really believe there is truth to this Indian spirituality.

Getting off the fence is all about making decisions, taking action and committing to your decisions in life. I was on the fence not one year ago, when I knew I loved and had an eye for fashion (I studied Fashion Design at FIT and Parsons), had a real knack for writing (I had seen the magazine world at work with a stint at W Magazine), but wasn’t quite sure how to marry these two talents.
I’m a Weight Watchers master. In 2003, I was 5’8? and 160 pounds — not exactly ideal for a 25-year-old single girl living in Manhattan. I spent three (!) years on Weight Watchers, and for two years, failed repeatedly. I obsessed over every drop of salad dressing and kernel of popcorn only to learn at my weekly meeting weigh-in that I’d gained half a pound. I quit multiple times, but would return months later with new resolve. Finally, in my third year, something clicked. I dropped 30 pounds in just six months.
Today is a very sad day for me, and for millions of people around the world. Today, after 25 years, we will watch The Oprah Winfrey Show for the very last time.
