How to Self-Publish Your Book

I have a question for you: What are you doing with your manuscript?

You finally finished writing your book.  Congratulations!  Possibly, you spent years writing and rewriting it.  I’m sure it represents a ton of work and an unbelievable amount of time, so you have accomplished something to really be proud of.

Now you have to address the publication issue. One possibility is self-publishing. Writing a book and publishing a book require very different skills, so you’ll have to do some internet research.  Once you start, you’ll be shocked at how much information is available on the web. What you probably won’t realize at first is that the web searches can lead to unintended problems.

There are two areas of concern here. First, some of the self-publishing information is inaccurate or flat out misleading.  Second, the web is filled with scam artists looking to prey on first-time self-publishing authors.

Every Little Thing Matters

I did a thing today.

Actually I drove away from the thing I wanted to do because I wasn’t sure about it.

I picked up my daughter as planned and when she got in the car, I told her about what I saw and what I wanted to do. She said, “If you don’t feel right about not doing something, you should go back.” So, I drove back with my Joy to the place where the woman stood holding a cardboard sign that read, “Please I have no job. I have two kids and we are hungry.”

Come on now.

We all know in our heart of hearts that no one wants to stand on a street with a sign begging for help. We’re sometimes just so wrapped up in our own worries being mindless to others around us that we don’t imagine how good and easy we have it. Or worse, and I’m guilty of this too, we shove a few coins in their hands so we can feel better about ourselves.

Meeting Your Edge

If you’re not afraid, it’s not your edge.

If you’re not resistant, it’s not your edge. If you can coast through it, it’s not your edge.

If you’re not feeling raw, it’s not your edge. If you’re trying to fit yourself into a mental framework, it’s not your edge. If you think you’ve got it figured out, it’s not your edge.

If you leap too soon, you’ll bounce back to your old ways before long; and if you wait too long to leap, you’ll remain bound to your old ways after the novelty of seeing different ground has worn thin. Going to your edge is not a one-time activity; it’s a way of being.

WomenOnTheFence Celebrates Its 10th Blogiversary!

Ten years ago today, I wrote my first blog post. It’s our WomenOnTheFence.com’s 10th BLOGIVERSARY!

How my first post went, September 11, 2009:

It’s Later Than You Think

Eight years ago, during the same month, I had twin boys and co-founded Cloudability. About three months ago Cloudability was acquired. About three weeks ago we lost one of our boys.

When I got the call I was sitting in a conference room with 12 people at our Portland office talking about PTO policies. Minutes earlier, I had admitted to the group that in the last 8 years I’d not taken more than a contiguous week off.

My wife and I have an agreement that when one of us calls, the other answers. So when the phone rang I stood up and walked to the conference room door immediately.

I was still walking through the door when I answered with “Hey, what’s up?”

Her reply was icy and immediate: “J.R., Wiley is dead.”

20 Years As An Entrepreneur With Some Fun #FlashbackFridays

Twenty years ago today, August 23, 1999, I became an entrepreneur. I registered my company for $37.00, called everyone I knew, knocked on strangers’ doors, and never looked back.

In honor of twenty years today, and it being #FlashbackFriday, here are some funny videos (when I had some INTERESTING HAIR, to say the least.)

Also a full circle moment that Global News / Global Montreal gave me my first media break.

Summer Is Here NOW

Hello, beautiful ladies!

I’ve been back in action this week.

The summer has been a lovely mix of work and play. I usually take two consecutive weeks off, but this year I split my weeks up.

Early July, I went to California with Hilly, and two exhausted and overwhelmed parents began to relax. We just enjoyed the outdoors– hiking, biking, yoga, and just being together. It was just what the doctor ordered for us.

In All the Illusions of Social Media Perfection, Here I Am

#TruthTuesday in effect.

Guys, this is me. I wrestled sharing this, but I am all about authenticity – I think you know that by now.

So, let’s get to it, shall we? I always share with a purpose and for a reason. ??
Last fall, I kissed my son goodnight and we leaned into each other and my nose was smacked hard. I had a nasal trauma, and what was already a pretty ugly nose, got even uglier??

I have wrestled with the idea of shaving the bump on my nose since my early twenties. So, after this incident, I went to a plastic surgeon and asked what could be done for the gonzo honker.

And OMG.

A few things:
