Mental Health Support For Kids Via Text Is Now Here!

An estimated 1.2 million children and youth in Canada are affected by mental illness.

This week on Global TV, I had my life coach, parenting contributor AND mom hat on for all our children. Today’s blog post is about sharing important news. And how lucky I am to have the platform both on television and online to share this crucial information. And finally, how fitting it is on Thanksgiving to be grateful for free mental health care accessible to our children at the tip of their fingers.

“Canadian youth can now access mental health support through a free bilingual texting service being rolled out across the country by Kids Help Phone. KIDS HELP PHONE is a charitable organization. Trained crisis volunteers at Kids Help Phone can now respond to young people seeking help by text, in addition to its existing phone and live chat services.

Oprah’s Favorite Things and The Cover of the Holiday Gift Guide!

So I can finally share it!! Two things I love just collided!! Today, I’m thrilled to announce Lisette L made it in the Oprah’s Favorite Things issue this month!! Not only that, the Lisette L denim jeans are on the cover of the Holiday Gift Guide!

If you tuned into Global TV this morning, you saw me wearing the exact Oprah Magazine denim jeans. So exciting- Montreal’s home grown success. Couldn’t be prouder to represent this incredible brand, founded also by a woman.

Achieving Enduring Love and Intimacy

By Dr. Laurie Betito

People often ask me what is love, what is intimacy?  You would think the answer was simple, but there are many myths we buy into that actually hurt us.

Many of us think that love in a relationship should be unconditional—but this is not so. The only love that is unconditional is the one you have for your children. When we talk about love in the romantic sense, we are basically trying to embody something that is pure and perfect within two individuals who are neither perfect nor pure themselves.

We often look to love as the answer– the solution to all of our problems. It’s as if because we think love is perfect, we feel that once we have it, everything in our lives becomes perfect. This is the story that we were told growing up. This is the story that we continuously see portrayed in books, movies and TV shows. Our culture feeds us an ideal and urges us to find it for ourselves.

The problem is that such an ideal doesn’t exist.

6 Great Fall Reads for Women!

It’s fall, but more like winter in Montreal these days. Therefore, I couldn’t think of a better time to snuggle up under a cozy blanket, make a warm cup of tea, sit by a fire, and dive into a great BOOK.

Yesterday on Global TV, I shared my 5 picks (plus a bonus) for fall reading… a little something for everyone. Whatever you fancy, I’ve got your covered: a little mystery, romance, fiction, memoirs, self-help.

If you’re ON THE FENCE about what to read, I hope this gives you some ideas.

Who’s Da Boss?

Ok, so it’s November.

We all know what’s going to happen in the next little while. It’s going to get darker earlier. There will be less daylight hours. It will get colder. Cold enough to hopefully have snow for Christmas. People are going to stay indoors more. This is also the beginning of flu season, so we are advised to get the flu shot. Our skin will become drier as the humidity wears off. The seasonal birds will be flying south and so will the snowbirds.

Geez, this sounds awful.

Actually, not at all! It’s all about perspective and taking control of your time. For me, I love this time of year. There are many reasons for this. Primarily, I’m happy for the humidity to go away as my curly hair will be tamed into straighter hair. I know that seems a bit trite, but I fight with the humidity for months. Ya, I don’t like having dry skin, but I love having dryer hair. Gone are the pollens and the bees. I will no longer struggle with seasonal allergies. Bring on the frost baby!

If You Didn’t Post It, Did It Really Happen?

If there has been one constant in my life over the past decade, it has been writing. Writing this blog, writing a book, writing speeches, writing TV segments each week, writing interview questions, writing proposals and pitches. Me, my keyboard and a cup of coffee have been my life for the past decade. So much so, that my kids often hand me their essays and say, “Here mom, can you proof read this?” And I never do… I want their words to be their own, not mine.

So when I attended a ‘lunch and learn’ on podcasting last week, and a lovely woman came up to me and said, “Erica, I have been a fan since day 1. I have been reading your blog for almost 10 years and I sense a shift. You aren’t writing as much as you used to.”

And I realized it’s starting to show.

Have A Daughter? How To Raise A Confident and Empowered Girl

There’s an expression, G-d gives you what you need, not what you want.

I guess it’s true… maybe?

When I gave birth to my son, exactly 15 years ago and one month today, someone bought me a book called Mother To Son, by Melissa and Harry Harrison. The book was life lessons on how to raise a boy- something I knew nothing of.

When I was pregnant with him, I had no idea what I was having. My husband and I didn’t want to know the sex (well really, he didn’t want to know). What I DID know, was that I was a beached whale. My father called me Orca instead of Erica. I had zits, out of control cellulite, and I barfed all nine months. In other words… all the signs of carrying a girl.

How To Embrace Aging and Make Peace With It

Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
— Mark Twain

If there’s one thing that no one in this world is exempt from, no matter how rich, how poor, how thin, how heavy, how nice, how evil, how generous, how WHATEVER… it’s AGING. Yes, we are all aging. And we are all fighting it at the exact same rate as the next person. Some will age better, some will age worse, but it’s a process we all must face whether we like it or not.

It’s a topic of conversation with women I meet and coach a lot lately.  Who is having work, who isn’t, how to age happily. And yesterday on Global TV, I discussed it. If you have or haven’t received a little help or needles from Dr. 90210, you still can try any or all of these 4 tips to make peace and help with the aging process.

Weedless Wednesday

Forget about Wordless Wednesday, today is our last Weedless Wednesday!

Yup, pot became legal in my country this morning.

Leaving Global TV this morning, Sainte Catherine St. smelled of pot. Everyone out there just smokin’ in the streets, having a jolly ol’ time!

I asked my Instagram peeps this question yesterday.
