CAREER

My SHERO: Misty Copeland

In keeping with the spirit of Wordless Wednesday, I will keep it short, and wordlessly.

When I read the headline yesterday, “Misty Copeland Becomes First Black Principal Dancer At American Ballet Theater,” I swear to G-d, I teared up. After 14 years as a soloist with the ballet company, Misty can now add principal dancer to her resume. If you are familiar with Misty’s story, you might tear up too. A story of tremendous struggle, extreme hard work and dedication to her craft, years of believing in herself, and total triumph.

Wordy Wednesday: We Want It All!

Saw this on Instagram, loved, and had to share.

‘Cuz I think this is a universal struggle. Actually, a daily on the fence dilemma. We all wanna look great, but we all (mostly all), love to eat!

As I once read,

Everyday I struggle between, “I want to look good naked” and “Treat ‘Yo Self!”

Hit 40 this year, and the struggle is real.

#MotivationMonday: No Overnight Success

I saw this on Twitter last week and saved it for today’s Motivation Monday. It literally gave me goosebumps. For anyone who has ever tried, failed, overcome and tested their resilience to the nth degree, this one is for you today. For anyone who is trying, failing, overcoming, and testing your resilience to the nth degree, this one is also for you.

It is an except from Jon Gordon’s new book The Carpenter.

“They think I became an overnight success. But I tell them, there is no such thing as an overnight success. The way to success is to work really hard for years. You show up every day. You do the work. You see yourself as an artist dedicated to your craft with a desire to get better every day. You put your heart and soul into your work as you strive for excellence. You desire to create perfection, knowing you’ll never truly achieve it but hoping to get close to it. You try new things. You fail. You improve. You grow. You face countless challenges and tons of rejection that make you doubt yourself and cause you to want to quit. But you don’t. You keep working hard, stay positive, and persevere through it all with resilience, determination, and a lot of hope and faith. Then you make it! Everyone wants to work with you and the world says ‘Where have you been?’ And you say ‘I’ve been here all along, and hopefully getting better day by day.’ To the world, you are an overnight success. To you, the journey continues. You’re a craftsman who wants to make your next work of art your best work no matter what you have accomplished in the past.

7 Thoughts of a Mompreneur

It’s not easy to be a stay-at-home mom. It’s not easy to be a working mom. The combination of the two, the mompreneur, has it pretty tough, too. She is trying to manage a business, oftentimes at home while she’s trying to manage her family. The thoughts that go through her head every day leave her passed the point of frazzled.

I should know. I am one. The hardest part of it isn’t the work. It’s not the twelve pages (front and back) of a “to-do” list. It’s not the four hours of sleep per night.

It’s the feeling of being alone.

The Season Of F*ck It

A few months ago, I was interviewed by my dear friend and therapist Dr. Leslie Carr. During our chat, we touched on one of my favorite topics – the overachieving woman. You see, we are entering a season I like to call, The Season of F*ck It.

Let me explain.

Many of my clients are a lot like you; get-it-handled type women who push and strive and seem to be in a constant state of overwhelm. High functioning women who seem to be able to do it all.

Which is why it’s imperative, every once in a while, to let yourself have a season of f*ck it; a time when you stop moving and doing and let life go fallow for a bit. I can tell you from personal experience that this is one of the hardest things to do, and often, whether consciously or not, we fight tooth and nail against the rest we say we want.

Career Wisdom From Your Favorite Celebs

When it comes to celebrities, we love to observe what they’re doing. From stalking their grocery shopping pics to obsessing over what they wearing and who they’re dating, we feed into it all. Who better than our favorite stars to motivate us with career advice? After all, they did make it to the tippy top, and I think it’s smart to learn from people who have mastered their craft.

So sit back, and let the inspiration pour over you!

Wordless Wednesday: Celebrating 2 Years With Global TV

I can’t believe how the time has flown by. Two years ago today, on a Wednesday morning at 8:45am, I started a new job as the Weekly Parenting and Lifestyle Correspondent on Global TV’s The Morning News.

I was nervous, somewhat green, and didn’t know how our chemistry would actually carry over after my screen test.
