Springtime Is The Perfect Time To Create Your “Mom Cave”

It’s spring! Spring is about spring cleaning, renewal, regeneration, reorganizing.

What if I said, spring is the perfect time to create your own Mom Cave? A MOM cave you say? We’ve all heard of THE MAN CAVE, where men go to decompress, have a beer, watch the game, or porn, whatever. But a mom cave? And I’m here to tell you– yes, yes, yes!

Now, the concept behind the man cave goes back many years, and stemmed from the idea that when a man came home to his wife and children, he first needed to go to his “cave” to decompress after a long day. But with more and more women in the workforce, contributing financially, and frankly, just downright exhausted and needing more “me-time”, more women are craving the same decompression time and cave time that men crave.

Your Choice Now…

As we are finishing up Q1, the first quarter of the year, it’s a good time to pause and take stock. Even if you’re not a company. 😉

I wrote a post in December about blooming where you are planted for the New Year. I truly believe, wherever you are on your path at any given moment, you don’t have to be THERE yet to still bloom NOW.

I wrote in December, that while experts were discussing new year’s resolutions and what changes to make in 2018, I offered you the idea that what if it’s all about NOT changing, not replacing— but fixing, enhancing and appreciating? Want to find a better job, bigger house, better relationship? Renovate what you have to make it suit your needs.

That option is always available for you.

The Closing of #WomensHistoryMonth and Beginning of Springtime

Given that it’s #WomensHistoryMonth, I was asked to participate in this photoshoot to celebrate the magic that happens when strong, boundary pushing women get together. This is only a small portion of the inspiring women who were in that studio on that wondrous evening (full photos below), but it was a true testament to how powerful the vibe of our tribe really is. We had women from all walks of life. Restaurateurs, doctors, mathematicians, real estate moguls, writers, jewellers, designers etc… Thank you to Monique Weston for bringing us all together, staging us, and to the incomparable Sasha Onyshchenko/Kravetz Photographics, your work is MIND-BLOWING.

Gang’s all here. This photoshoot is part of a much bigger conversation, which will unfold in the next little bit… but for now it’s exciting to be part of a message that highlights what happens when brains and beauty meet. When strength and confidence shatter ceilings. When we are effortlessly ourselves, open, raw, and ready to seize opportunity. Intelligence is sexy. Nobody in this group accepted the bare minimum life had to offer, and nobody ever should. Together we can move mountains.

On The Fence About Cosmetic Procedures? Facebook Live with Dr. Sandra McGill

So, back to my fun announcement. I had the great privilege of being included in a spring photo shoot of inspirational women in Montreal in honor of Women’s History Month, and met an incredible woman there, plastic surgeon Dr. Sandra McGill.

Sandra and I got into a conversation about women and beauty today. I told her I am choosing to age naturally – I haven’t had any work done to my face or body, but that I sometimes feel like the oldest looking 42 year old around my community. Many of the women I see look truly fabulous – smooth faces, fabulous lips, awesome eyebrows. I have wrinkles around my eyes, cellulite behind my things, large pores and bad skin, but I’m trying, goddammit, I’m trying. I eat well, I sleep a lot, I practice yoga, and I practice good self care. Isn’t that enough? For me right now, it is.

But I am still curious, and I know many of you are too, because you’ve written in that you would like to read blog posts on options available to help preserve your youth and vitality… with a little help. Wink wink.

Is Too Much Screen Time Really a Big Deal?

How much screen time is too much screen time?

Here in the UK, Ofcom found that by the age of four the average kid is spending three hours a day in front of a screen. If you are a teenager, that rises to almost seven hours daily.

How scared should you be about your screen time?

Reading popular articles about the effects of screens on your health is enough to give anyone an anxiety attack. While it has been found that using screens to learn can be beneficial, it’s when screens are used for entertainment or distraction that things gets worrisome.

Happy Birthday @Oprah! 25 Lessons Learned

Today is Oprah’s birthday.

For those of you who are big readers of this blog, you know that Oprah is my hero, my queen, my inspiration. I’ve met her, I’ve attended her LifeClass taping, the Weekend with Oprah, I’ve filmed 5 episodes of The OWN SHOW on OWN TV,  etc…

Heck, she even tweeted me. 😉

So, to honor O’s birthday, I have rerun an old post of all the life lessons that I learned from Oprah. I hope you will enjoy it the second time around, and if you are a new reader, well, enjoy it for the first time.

Celebrating 5 Years With Global TV’s Morning News

It was five years ago, that I sat nervously in the green room of Global Television. I was starting my new weekly job as the Parenting and Lifestyle Correspondent on The Morning News.

The new show kicked off, and my first segment aired live January 29th, 2013, at 8:45am. I was nervous, somewhat green, and didn’t know how my chemistry with host Camille Ross would actually carry over beyond my screen test.

Five years later, I cannot believe how quickly the time has flown by. What started as a weekly job has grown into a friendship with everyone there, and I am grateful for the entire Global Morning News team.

When The Dress Doesn’t Fit

It would not zip up.

It had, not two weeks ago, zipped just fine—with extra room, in fact. But now, forty-five minutes before we were supposed to be sitting in the wedding chapel pew, the beautiful silk cocktail dress would not zip. The wedding was at 5:30 on Saturday evening. It was black-tie (technically “optional,” but not practically so). The bride’s family was from New York City, and the wedding was in an upscale part of Connecticut. I had packed only one formal dress to wear. This dress. This dress that was supposed to fit, but didn’t.

“Let me see,” my husband said as I started pacing in the tiny Air B&B Bedroom that looked like an explosion of somebody’s great aunt’s entire nick-knack collection. We’re talking cat figurines, cat clocks, a cat doorstop, and some angels (of course there were angels—with older women of the great-aunt variety, where there are always cats and angels). There were also weird glass bowls, and teacups, and not enough room on either side of the bed to fit both suitcases. There were proper inns, of course, but those cost three times as much, and we have other things to pay for, like diapers.

If You’ve Got No Plan… I’ve Got You Covered

Hello, I’m back! Back in the groove. Kids are back in school (hallelujah), I’m back at work (grateful).

Our family time over the break was really restful. I became an auntie for the first time too!

Happy 2018, my beautiful ladies.

I checked in once this break, as I am really trying to focus on being present in all my activities. I also wanted to be fresh for 2018.

I feel ready.

If you rolled into the New Year without any resolutions, or are feeling stuck or in a rut, change starts today for you.

I’ve got a little roadmap ready to guide you.

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Truth? I’m sitting right now with one of my besties and said to her, “How should I close the year? What should I write about today?”

And she proceeded to tell me about an article she was reading recently on the “unpleasable generation.” The article discussed how over-parenting is making our kids unpleasable. Restless. Even depressed and anxious. With technology at our fingertips to give us quick answers, with parents giving in to their kids’ every whim trying to keep them happy, combined with mom hovering to make sure Johnny handed in that assignment, or worse, call the teacher to see what can be done with that poor grade, our children aren’t building their resilience muscle. They are actually becoming anxious and depressed in the process. When they aren’t given the chance to fail or try new things, they become lazy, unpleasable.

So, my bestie and I decided, instead of sitting here today and contemplating our New Years resolutions and how we make next year better, why don’t we take time to focus on what we DO have, and how we can build on that. Can we focus on being PLEASABLE? And not just for our kids, but us too.
